Our wars were in the shadows, and we were told they would always stay there.
Between Vietnam and 9/11, a new kind of war emerged — quiet, covert, and unseen. In this first-hand account, Christopher Brewer pulls back the curtain on the years America’s elite soldiers operated between official wars. Cleared by the Department of Defense, In the Shadows Between the Wars captures the truth of what it meant to serve during a time when no one was supposed to be fighting — but the fighting never stopped.
Follow Brewer through jump zones, jungle firefights, and classified missions across more than 130 nations. These are the stories of soldiers who stood in the gap, carrying out dangerous work that shaped modern Special Forces as we know it today.

Christopher Brewer is a retired U.S. Army officer and Special Forces operator whose career spanned the years between Vietnam and the War on Terror. A self-described “tweener,” Brewer served in an era that history nearly forgot — the time when America was not officially at war, yet its Special Forces were fighting in the shadows across the globe.
His twenty-four-year military career took him from Ranger Battalion to command positions in Latin America and the Pacific, including operations in Colombia, Panama, and Okinawa. His work was reviewed and cleared by the Department of Defense for open publication in 2024 — an unprecedented step that gives readers an authentic glimpse into missions once deemed untellable.
“These are their stories, too — for the soldiers who can finally show their kids some of the things they did we were told not to talk about.”
Christopher Brewer is available for interviews, podcast appearances, and live events focused on military history, leadership, and personal resilience. His talks explore the realities of serving between major conflicts, the evolution of U.S. Special Forces, and the human challenges of operating in secrecy.
He collaborates with veteran organizations, universities, and leadership programs to share practical lessons in adaptability, discipline, and purpose gained through decades of service in high-stakes environments.
